How to Become A StuntWoman

We've all at one point thought it would be cool to become a stunt performer. After watching an action movie and seeing how bad ass some of these scenarios can be. In fact, I find it more enjoyable watching a stuntwoman kick ass in a movie than a man. They're more graceful and have smarter techniques. If you've every thought, "how do I become a stuntwoman?" you're in for a treat!

Cute LA had the chance to interview entrepreneur, actress, and stuntwoman, Kate Boyer. Doubling for many of Hollywood's leading ladies. She's swung from a helicopter, been lit on fire and done motorcycle chases. Let's say, she's lives an adventurous life! On top of acting on the big screen, Kate Boyer is starting a juicing business.

Read on to learn more about Kate Boyer. From how to become Hollywood's Go-To Stunt Woman to starting a new company:

Kate Boyer Actress and Stuntwoman

//  What was your inspiration behind pursuing a career in front of the camera? //

In 8th grade NAS’ “I can” was released. “I know I can be what I wanna be, if I work hard at it, I’ll be where I wanna be”. I played that album on repeat until my CD player stopped working. I knew from an early age that acting was my calling, but I was completely unaware of how to get involved. One day I snuck into a SAG meeting and started randomly asking people, "How do you become an actor?" (By the way, I had no idea what SAG was. For the longest time, I thought it was an agency). They told me to get involved with community theater, so I began taking the train to New York and the rest was history.

//  What separates you from other stuntwomen or actresses that you are competing with for work?   //

The most important thing I’ve learned in this business is there is no other YOU. Having the red hair helps too! I don't have to compete with anyone else but myself; this is my journey. I attribute this mindset/attitude to my upbringing which made me an incredibly determined, strong, and motivated woman.

Kate Boyer Quote on Stunt Performing

//  What were the first steps in preparing yourself for your career and how did you seek out booking work?  //

I discovered stunt performance while working as a production assistant on the TV show Rescue Me. People were jumping out of buildings, being set on fire, crashing cars; I was absolutely amazed and knew that's what I wanted to do. It took me about 3-4 years of training and networking in the stunt community until I landed my first job on the Ben Stiller film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. From there, my career took off.

// What misconceptions do people have about stuntwomen or actresses? //

Well for one, I didn’t even know that actresses didn’t do their own stunts until I saw it in front of me. I’m the type of person when I watch a film, I let myself be completely entranced by it. I don’t want to wonder how things are made and who’s doing what, I want to be taken away! That’s hard now that I’ve worked in film, but I still make sure I let myself get lost.

// What challenges do you face with dealing with rejection as you are your brand/business? //

All this business is, is rejection. I make sure I have a life outside of film; I have things going on. It makes you more desirable when you don’t need the work. Like anything in life, no one likes that needy person, so I don’t need it. I make sure I do things daily that keep me happy and my energy right. It’s all about energy.

// What advice do you have for someone just starting out? //

Never forget your roots. It's so easy in Los Angeles to forget our beginnings, why we started to pursue this crazy field in the first place! That's something I refuse to forget. I really want to share my story and remind actors it doesn't happen overnight, I still have so much to do but I believe in myself because if you don’t, know one else will.

// Tell us about your plans to start a juicing business? What’s the motivation behind that? //

I want to bring juice bars to areas of Philadelphia that don’t even have organic options. It’s a dream of mine to bring healthy food to inner city youth that don’t normally have access to organic clean living. I’m from Philadelphia, and we didn’t have the healthiest options growing up. It was only from my cousin getting cancer did I become aware of what it meant to eat clean. It changed my life, and I want to share this knowledge with the girls who were me then, just hustling, trying to get by. Health is wealth. I’m in the beginning steps now.

Fuck New Years Resolutions

To start off this year, I decided to forgo any lie to myself that I would complete some absurd New Year's Resolution. In fact, I just didn't even try. If you remember last year, I wrote: "New Year's Resolution's That Don't Suck." I must say I was successful in completing most of those. Though, I set the bar pretty low. Haha

I'm a firm believer that if you want to change something, you should do it in that instant. Example if you decide you're going to start working out. Then go run, that day. Don't leave it for "Monday," or in this case "New Year, New Me."

Still, in having fun with the idea of New Year's Resolutions. I did a video explaining the top three resolutions you should have for yourself. Flipping the switch on the usual.

1. Fluctuating Weight - Accept the fact that sometimes you might be a few extra pounds than you'd like to. That's okay, embrace that sh!t.

2. Accept your Singla AF status - You might find the love of your life or you might be single all year. That's okay, just have fun and put yourself out there. Don't place so much pressure on yourself.

3. Make tiny changes - The smaller, the more attainable the goal. Once you can get these little changes down. It will be easier to tackle the big goals.

That's pretty much it! See? Those resolutions look easy and they ARE easy. I still won't do them, but maybe you will. hahaha

To get a more in-depth look at these resolutions check out my latest YouTube video, "New Year's Resolution Fail!"

Scared of Santa

Scared of Santa.png

As a child, I loved the holidays. It was always full of wonder and fun. Christmas growing up was in Denver Colorado. Which meant a white Christmas with snow. I remember when I had my first Christmas in Los Angeles. It was a surreal experience. It didn't feel like the Christmas' that I was accustomed to. I missed the smell of Christmas. The smell of fresh snow. It's a distinctive smell that wraps you up in the holidays.

Regardless, no matter where I celebrated Christmas. One thing ran true, my fear of Santa. It was a love/hate relationship. I loved that he brought me presents. I hated that he had to break into my house to do so. I was a weird child, I don't know why I was so scared of him. Maybe because he was a stranger.  That's the reason I couldn't sleep on Christmas Eve. Not just because of the presents. But also because Santa, the jolly terrifying man, was coming. I  didn't want any conversations or Christmas adventures. Just leave the presents and go, Santa.

My latest video shares my fear of Santa in hilarious detail. Make sure to check it out below:

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Secrets Girls Do On Dates

Secrets girls do on dates

There's excitement when it comes to dating someone new. You build them up in your head and they either surpass expectations or fall flat. When it comes to sex, women have the decision-making power. I find nothing wrong if you're a lady that likes to be a freak in the sheets on the first date or wait it out for awhile. Either way, the temptation is real AF sometimes. Especially when trying to hold out on sex for a few more dates.

If you're, a guy, wondering, "will you get laid?" Here are some secrets girls do, on dates, to hold out a little longer.

1. DON'T SHAVE OUR BODY - Yep that's right, we become furry animals. Especially when we're not ready to invite you to pantyland. The weather could be 90 degrees. We might show up to the date in long sleeves, skinny jeans, and knee-high boots. All to cover up the chastity belt of protective body hair.

2. BODY CONSCIOUS DRESSES - Wearing a dress that hugs the body. Under that tight dress, is the second layer of skin called Spanx. This constrains rolls, bulges and that cake we ate before the date. If you thought it was hard to unsnap a bra. Don't even get started on this, you'll lose the battle.

3. PROFESSIONAL GRADE MAKEUP - For me, I have many different makeup looks. One of them includes "don't touch my face." Means my eyebrows are on fleek and my lipstick is impenetrable. Chances are if she has a lot of makeup on. She doesn't feel like leaving an imprint it on your pillow. When I know sex might be going down, I wear lighter makeup.

Disclaimer - these secrets are to help us stay strong. They don't always work. Which can, of course, lead to funny stories and great sex. I'm just letting you know, if you encounter these situations, don't get your hopes up.

Check out my latest YouTube video, "Will I Get Laid?" - which breaks down these points in funny detail.

Entrepreneur Spotlight: Hannah Luu, OncoGambit

Entrepreneur Spotlight Hannah Luu Oncogambit

During this time of year it's easy to get caught up in the spirit of the holidays. It's also a time to remember that not everyone has the privilege of spending time with friends and family. Some people face tough decisions as they fight their battle with cancer. Let's face it, cancer sucks. I've lost friends and family to it. But I've also watched friends and family fight it to lead healthy lives after treatments.

Cute LA had the chance to interview female entrepreneur, Hannah Luu of OncoGambit. She along with her co-founder, Laura Bourdeanu, created the platform to assist cancer patients. In finding the right treatments and expert opinions. While helping to reduce their anxiety about this step in their lives. OncoGambit allows patients to concentrate on the best treatment. While saving time, money and energy.

Read on to learn more about Hannah Luu and the OncoGambit Platform:

OncoGambit Startup

// What's the inspiration behind OncoGambit? //

As a practicing oncologist, I have encountered a lot of confusion and worry from cancer patients and their families about their treatment recommendations. This truly concerned me because patients were usually more worried about their treatments than they were about their disease. Having experienced this, OncoGambit came to me in an ‘Aha’ moment as a great way to relieve the uncertainty around treatment. My goal in creating this platform was to help create a quick and easy way for patients. To get educated about their cancer and their cancer treatment options. The OncoGambit website validates their treatment recommendations and helps them become advocates for their own health and survival.

// What separates OncoGambit from similar companies? //

There are several reputable websites such as WebMD, American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen, and National Cancer Institute (NCI), to name a few, that provide general information about cancer and treatment.

OncoGambit takes it a step further and provides patients with specific treatment regimens. That include doses of the drugs, the frequency of the treatment, and the duration of the treatment that are in line with current guidelines. We do that by asking specific information about the patient’s information and circumstances such as age, sex, cancer characteristics, and cancer stage. To give them specific details for a recommended treatment plan. This way, patients know what to expect every step of the way in their cancer journey.

The information is updated regularly, as new data and studies become available. The most current treatment for a specific cancer may change year to year as new studies come out and doctors agree that regimen A, for example, is now better suited than regimen B. You don’t have the same updating in real-time or the level of accuracy in treatment recommendations that you get with OncoGambit on any other web-based medical platform.

// What were the first steps in creating OncoGambit? //

The first steps in creating OncoGambit were to figure out if it were possible to write a program that would result in a treatment recommendation based on the information provided by the patients. For this I teamed up with my brother, who is a software developer, to test it out. Once we learned that this was possible, we proceeded to build the software. We were able to compile and summarize the cancer treatments recommended by multiple national treatment guidelines. Which are based on the latest research and the consensus of over 1100 cancer experts.

// What are the most difficult & most rewarding aspects of entrepreneurship? //

The most difficult aspect of entrepreneurship is making decisions and not knowing whether they are right or wrong. Not all the decisions I’ve made have been right, but let’s say I learned to trust my intuition! There are so many rewarding aspects of entrepreneurship, but the most rewarding is certainly choosing the people I work with. Teaming up with my partners was key in having a happy working relationship. I also enjoy the ability to create my own opportunities by attending conventions and networking with like-minded people. I certainly feel like I shape my own destiny by being an entrepreneur.

Hannah Luu Quote OncoGambit

// What advice do you have for someone creating their own tech start up? //

My advice for someone creating their own startup is to join professional networking groups. You will meet professionals interested in helping others develop their ideas. While networking and making life-long friendships. I have met numerous entrepreneurs who willingly help me either through offering advice on how to bring my business to the next level or letting others know about my business. I highly recommend this to any new business owner.

// Anything else you want our readers to know about OncoGambit? //

In order to win the fight against cancer, it's going to take everyone! Everyone being informed and everyone feeling like they have access to the best information. That is easy-to-understand and follow, when it comes to treatments. It is very rewarding to educate our patients about their cancer, treatments and that they can have a better chance of survival with our treatment validation tool.

We built this for the patients, not the oncologists. But the oncologists should want their patients to feel confident in their treatment. So patients can enter the treatment process with the most confidence as possible. As a doctor, you want your patient to be in the right state of mind when facing this challenging process, and that is exactly what patients will get from using OncoGambit!
